Happy New Year!

So it’s 2012 and the end of the world is creeping up on everyone. This will be a fun year. Full of lots of changes for everyone around! First being two friends tying the knot this past Friday. It was beautiful, simple, small and sublime. It was a wonderful ceremony and the smallest I have ever been to! Both bride and groom were stunning and the bridesmaids were a sight to behold. It was perfect and tears were shed. I just wish I hadn’t inherited my mum’s lack of late nights tolerance and inability to stay up past 10pm. Really now.

I have only one resolution this year and that’s to stop chewing my fingers. I can do it but sometimes everything just piles on me and it’s the absent minded chewing that gets me through the day sometimes. The other thing I’m doing this year is a photo a day. Not so much to show my day in one picture but just one snapshot of the day. It’ll be a mixture of snaps from the phone and actual thought about photos. But you can catch it here.

This is my first full week back at work and I wonder if I can get through five days! Thanks to illness and random free days over the Christmas period I’ve been on three and four day weeks. It has been fun but I always feel spoiled when I don’t work a full week.

Got Jonathan kissing the Blarney Stone and I’ll report back when that gift of the gab kicks in. Also coming up in the calendar next is Rammstein. Have to say I’m ridiculously excited for this. I don’t know if it’s just to see the crowd, to see the pyrotechnics or to actually see the band perform. But I shall be deaf for a long time afterwards I’m sure. On the subject of music I’m hmm-ing and ahh-ing about iTunes Match. There is a 25,000 song limit and Jonathan would break that easily. And this was only really a way of getting his music across all my devices should we be somewhere and need a random song that he remembers. All my music is purchased iTunes and in the cloud any way with the exception of a few albums. That and Jonathan’s music is all protected WMA’s so there’s no easy way to import that into iTunes. All my Apple training will come in handy for this but at the end of the day there will have to be a lot of CD burning in the future. A nice Sunday of nothing but giving the CD drive on this computer a work out.

The best part of the New Year so far? I get to start using my 2012 Moleskine Diary. Wooo yeah!

Finally, a post about writing…

So I haven’t been doing much writing. In a way I have, I’ve been noting things down in my glorious red Moleskine (I have noticed that with my red hair, and red iPhone and iPad cases I am just a red coat away from putting the St George’s Cross on the chimney stack- which isn’t a good thing). I have ideas spilling out of my head but they have no structure. I think I should just stick to coming up with the ideas and pay someone to fill them out. Seeing as I have a chore trying to write anything normally.

In an effort to get the writing up to scratch I’ve been looking around for writing competitions, short stories and other challenges to force myself into a deadline to get something written. They are out there but the thing is I can’t always write high fantasy and space operas. I should try and get something new written that at least challenges me! And lets face it, it will be good to finally get something written from beginning to end with out giving up before I know what the ending is.

I have these ideas, they are complete stories but they’re just not filled out and I can’t seem to do it. I’m whining I know, and I’m making excuses (something I am very good at) but still every time I sit down to write the ideas up I fail rather spectacularly. I don’t have voice, I don’t have a style, and I can’t get my characters to be people and not just devices. I need practice, I know this but then I come full circle, read my work, read the constructive criticism of it and decide I’d rather play World of Warcraft instead because in my mind I’m not going to change or improve…!

However, this time I’ll write a story and I’ll enter it into a competition and see where it gets me. The last time I won anything because of any talent I possessed was an art competition when I was 10. And I got the top prize for it too but then there really isn’t any difficulty in beating people when you’re that age but now, as an adult I am surrounded by these fantastically talented people and I find myself basking in their talent rather than trying to improve my own.

Anyway, onwards and upwards, if you know of any short story competitions let me know! I’m on the look out now!

Somethings I just won’t give up..

Moleskine's

… And that is buying stationery I don’t need. Well, I want it; I just don’t need it…! So far, on day number 6, I have stuck to my guns on the resolutions. Not saying that just now as I ordered a chicken Korma from just-eat.ie that I wasn’t tempted with getting a bottle of pop to go along with it. However I’m sat here with a glass of water and enjoying that just as much as the fizzy delight that was Sprite.

These past couple of days have been anything but productive. I have finally shifted the migraine that I had yesterday (which mutated from an upset stomach, thank you body). And after a day and a night on codeine it appears to have gone and I am at least able to sit in a lit room without the dull throb behind my eyes or the ache in my neck that even codeine can’t hide from me.

That, of course equals me back in work tomorrow morning. One more week of early shift then I’m on the late shift where my weekend is split between Friday and Sunday. Not done anything like this before, so I’m looking forward to finding out I don’t actually like it!

The latter half of the day was spent tidying up and putting the odd things away. I had bought two frames from Urban Outfitters for Vinyl and put two Iron Maiden albums into them. Still have to get them up on the wall along with my birthday present from Mum and Dad and my print of “The Meeting on the Turret Stairs” (which also needs framing). When I was in Courtmacsherry in an attempt to make the house a little more mine, I bought a chandelier from Dunnes Stores. It was nothing fantastic, and did more to block light than actually disperse it nicely. For some reason an agreement was come to about it going up in our new bedroom here in Cork. Only we’ve started making additions to it…

Bug Chandelier

There are a whole box of bugs that need to go up somewhere. Some of them are slightly too large to go on the light fitting but I’m sure we’ll find a place for them. My favourite part of this new idea is this:

Bug Chandelier

The giant silhouettes! When I can I’ll get the rest up and show you all what it looks like.

I love being inspired. Sometimes it’s an individual, a photo, a texture, anything. Feeling that small burst inside me of an idea (which 90% of the time I’ll never follow through – New Years Resolution!) is a fantastic rush. In my reader I saw this link pass by and as it was a song I particularly liked (in fact, two songs mashed together) I gave it a listen. You should too! It’s a mash up of Hey, Soul Sister by Train and New Soul by Yael Naim by a very talented Ellen Hinton of Ellen Once Again. I’m bookmarking her blog just because I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next, I’m looking forward to hearing some of her own work too.

So this burst of inspiration that popped inside me when I heard this has gone into that NaNoWriMo I never finished…

I do have a holiday to look forward to now though. Fingers crossed nothing comes up to upset this applecart but at the end of February I’m off to the UK again to visit home and this time I’m bringing Farmboy along for the adventure. We’ve hired a car so we have drives over the Dales and Moors, as well as fish and chips in Whitby, The Deep in Hull and then all the awesome things to do in York itself. Climbing the Minster, The Dungeons, Clifford’s Tower, Whigmaleeries on Stonegate. And what I’m really looking forward too is afternoon tea at Middlethorpe Hall (none of this Barry’s nonsense). Tally ho, pip pip, what what. Welcome to England old boy. Maybe I could get Farmboy to wear his Pith Helmet for the occasion? We shall see, but for now I must bit you all adieu as I head off for a movie before bedtime.
